Azulejo Art
English | Castellano
Azulejo Art is an exploration of the designs and patterns of Portuguese azulejos (tiles), through various media, principally photography. The essence is that an image of banal objects, buildings and everyday details, can be transformed into something beautiful and far from its original appearance. For me, one of the most interesting aspects of the azulejos and the tiled walls found all over Portugal, is the way a very simple design can be used to create very impressive and complicated visual effects. This was the inspiration for my own style of Azulejo Art. The images have not been photoshopped or retouched in any way. The pieces are all made up of a single image, repeated over and over - the only modifications are in the orientation of the image and sometimes, the size. Instead of printing the final piece as one, they are created from multiple small "tiles" (normally 4 or 16), each one hand-fitted. In this age of Photoshop, it's a refreshing opportunity to create attractive visual art using very simple techniques.
